The first memory of a strong connections to music, was during a journey to the sea in the back of my parents car – hearing the first track from Bryan Adams ‘So Far So Good’. That record was the sole reason I wanted to play the guitar. Due to the kindness of my grandparents, at the age of 6 years old I began to play a small classical guitar; that had an impossibly high action of, what would still be today – an inch at the 12th fret. I have fond memories of learning to navigate the fret board, discovering how to improvise, much to the bewilderment of my strictly classical teacher. I was brought up by my parents, in an emersion of Irish Folk, Rock and Classical Music.
I live near the mountains with my wife and daughter, in North Wales UK – the outer territories of Snowdonia National Park. The stunning landscapes here fuel my work. We live in an old cottage with our beautiful daughter, nestled in a hill side, where we’ve converted several rooms as the studio I write from. Artisan, is a word I’d use to describe my process. Music is made with my hands. My work is raw, precise, earthy and has time devoted in its emotional detail.
I generally work best to a strong edit, although many times I’ve worked with film that’s in its early stages of development. I’ve worked scoring advertising for the last five years, scoring two box office films on the side. Over the next few years I’m furthering my work in documentary cinema. From my experience with different teams, I’ve seen how valuable and personal their films are to them. Relationally working, is my preferred method of involvement. I thrive in the writing and refining of the score through conversation.
The scores I write endeavour to harness live sessions, hardware synthesis and solo/ensemble players, minimal use if any of sample libraries in the final work. Every film has musicians uniquely express their music live direct to picture. The score is then real, human expression of the film – investing into the film’s impact and longevity. Music has always been tangible for me, and I’ve enjoyed sculpting and carving space into it.
I strongly resonate with films that have a raw, honest, human dimension to their narrative and subjects.
